Week of August 11

Hello again, everyone! One week until we get to see students return for the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year. This week Mrs. Osterhaus and I have been attending training to learn how to use Powerschool. This will be our new student information system at SPS. This will allow parents to access student grades and attendance via the internet. It is similar to our previous system, but has many more features and is more user friendly for our parents and staff.

During parent-teacher conferences in October, there will be training sessions with Mr. Chris Ericson to teach parents how to use Powerschool. Until this time access to Powerschool will be limited to teachers and administration. Parents, if you have questions about your child's progress this first quarter, please continue to communicate with teachers via email, a phone conversation, or meeting face to face. As always, please contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns that may arise.

On Wednesday, the teachers and staff will return through the doors of SPS for the start of teacher meetings for the 2008-2009 school year. During the first day of teacher in-service, staff will be learning about Powerschool and spending time getting classrooms ready for the ensuing year. Thursday will include meetings with building principals and our new superintendent, Mrs. Wiseman. Friday provides teachers with additional time to work in classrooms, and data input for our school improvement team.

Don't forget: Thursday is our annual kindergarten picnic! We look forward to seeing all of our newest mustangs and fillies as well as their families. This is the night that kids will get to have their very first bus ride. Look on here next week to see pictures from this event!

Week of August 4th

Hello again everyone! I am back in the office this week and I am looking forward to continuing to get the school ready for another fantastic year. Last week I was at administrator's days in Kearney, NE where I learned lots of new things. One of the biggest sessions I attended was on the new Language Arts standards and statewide assessment that our school will be taking in the spring of 2010. If you go to the Nebraska Department of Education website
http://www.nde.state.ne.us you will be able to find the draft document of the new language arts standards. Of course, Sutton Public Schools is already ahead of the game as our reading program and reading teachers are already teaching what the department of education has outlined. There are four standards in this new document: the K-12 reading standard, K-12 comprehensive writing standard, K-12 comprehensive speaking/listening standard, and the k-12 comprehensive multiple literacies standard.

What does all of this mean for us at Sutton Elementary? Well, we will continue to proceed ahead providing quality literacy instruction through Reading Mastery and direct instruction. We will prepare our students for the statewide language arts test much in the same way we prepare students in our day to day classrooms to "educate our students for future success." We will focus on reading and writing as school improvement goals as well as incorporating technology to produce 21st century learners.

If you have any questions about this statewide assessment or the "new" standards, please contact me at school!

Back to School

Hi everyone! I am officially back in the elementary office to begin another wonderful year. I had a terrific summer spending time at Johnson Lake with my family and visiting California with my three daughters. We went to see my sister - she is having a baby soon! We had lots of fun visiting Sacramento and San Francisco. Also...it was Maelynn's first plane ride!

Mrs. Osterhaus is here working at school as well and she is working to get everything ready for the new year. When you come back to school you will want to check out the elementary gymnasium. WOW! This was a HUGE project that was completed this year. We have all new paint up in the gym and does it look GREAT! It shows our Mustang and Filly pride with red and black stripes on the white walls.

Well I had better wrap things up so I can keep getting the school ready for a new year. So......I will have to say so long for now. I will be in the office tomorrow morning (July 29th) and then I will not be back in until Monday August 4th. Mrs. Osterhaus will be working all week if you need anything. See you all soon!
